Australia intends to purchase $4.7 billion of U.S. SM-2 and SM-6 air defense missiles for the Royal Australian Navy.

The deal includes the acquisition of SM-2 Block IIIC and SM-6 missiles, which are among the most advanced interceptors available. The SM-6 provides long-range defense against threats such as aircraft and cruise missiles, and it can also serve as an anti-ship missile, while the SM-2 Block IIIC is optimized for medium-range engagements with enhanced guidance and homing capabilities.

These missiles will be deployed on Australia's Hobart-class destroyers and future Hunter-class frigates. Deliveries are expected to span over a decade.
