Raytheon awarded $250 million for LEO tracking satellites

Raytheon Technologies has received a $250-million contract from the U.S. Space Development Agency (SDA) to develop seven missile warning and tracking satellites for the SDA’s planned low Earth orbit satellite network, which will be used to track advanced threats such as hypersonic missiles.
The seven satellites are projected to cost approximately $40 million apiece.
The network, known as the Proliferated Warfighter Space Architecture, is expected to feature hundreds of satellites launched by the SDA into low Earth orbit every two years, in what the agency calls tranches.
The Raytheon satellites will be included as part of the Tranche 1 Tracking Layer. The contract increases the amount of Tranche 1 satellites from 28 to 35.
In addition to Raytheon’s satellites, Northrop Grumman and L3Harris will develop 14 satellites each for the network through a contract awarded in July 2022.
