Fiber Optic Connectors, Cables, and Termini for Ultra-High-Bandwidth Data Transmission

Applications across all domains require a substantial amount of data to perform, and they need it near-instantly.
Modern military and aerospace systems rely on high-speed, low-latency data transmission to support everything from advanced sensors to real-time command and control networks. Next-generation systems will enjoy even more advanced interlinked capabilities, with artificial intelligence, autonomous platforms, and improved electronic warfare systems driving the need for faster, more secure data pathways. As networks become more complex and data-intensive, reliable, high-performance fiber optic interconnect technologies will be needed more than ever to enable supercharged operability.
Delivering these results not only depends on providing industry-leading fiber optic speeds, but on maintaining low insertion loss and high return loss in a package resilient to the rigors of harsh environments across land, air, sea, and space. Amphenol Fiber Optic Solutions are designed to exceed that challenge, and we’ve been doing it for decades.

Fiber Optic Termini

Our Fiber Optic Termini are the backbone of our fiber optic connectors and cables. These specialized fiber system components terminate the optical fiber within the connector system, aligning and securing the fiber to ensure proper signal transmission. It is through the termini that fiber connector systems can accomplish low insertion loss and high return loss when mated with another fiber connector due to the precision alignment they enable between the fibers.
We offer a variety of fiber optic solutions incorporating MIL-PRF-29504, HD20, JSFC, ARINC 801, and MT ferrules termini.
What Are Fiber Optics?

Fiber optics refers to a class of technologies that incorporate optical fibers to transmit vast amounts of data extremely quickly. Fiber optic systems work by converting digital information into light signals that are transmitted through the core of an optical fiber. These light signals are then converted back to electrical signals using an optical transceiver so the data can be interpreted.
As opposed to electrical signals that travel through traditional copper cables and contacts, fiber optics enable higher bandwidth capacity and can transmit data over much longer distances at faster data rates. Because they transfer data through light signals rather than electric signals, fiber optics are also EMI immune.
Fiber optics have revolutionized the way mission-critical technologies send and receive data and are the preferred method for signal transfer in military and aerospace applications such as advanced avionics and radar systems.
What Connectors Are Used for Military and Aerospace Fiber Optics?

At Amphenol Military High Speed, MIL-SPEC circular connectors such as MIL-DTL-38999 and ARINC 801 are used as the basis for many of our fiber optic connectors that house our fiber optic termini. We also offer fiber optic termini for use in our LRM rectangular connectors.
Selecting the right connector depends on the specific environmental challenges for your application depends on a variety of factors including the number of fibers needed, and whether the application requires frequent mating and unmating or permanent installation.
Key Features of Military and Aerospace Fiber Optic Connectors

Fiber systems used in military and aerospace applications have several features that set them apart from commercial applications, including a high degree of ruggedization, high-density designs, and alignment with MIL-SPECs and harsh environment fiber optic standards.
While fiber optic systems are used throughout telecommunications applications around the world and in a variety of other industries, military and aerospace fiber optic connectors are typically designed to withstand the punishing operational conditions found in aircraft, naval vessels, and other defense platforms. These connectors feature a high degree of environmental sealing and strength to protect sensitive fibers and maintain signal integrity under pressure.
The high-density designs of harsh environment fiber optic assemblies allow for multi-channel fiber optics to enable significantly high data throughput capabilities, with a focus on ensuring low insertion and high return loss to guarantee the integrity of the signal in mission-critical systems.
Designing harsh environment fiber optic connector systems around standards like D38999 and ARINC 801 also ensure these interconnects can easily be integrated with legacy platforms and designed into newer applications while simplifying maintenance and field upgrades.
