The U.S. Navy has selected Boeing as the prime contractor for its F/A-XX next-generation fighter program, awarding the company a contract valued at more than $20 billion for the full-scale development phase.

Announced Sept. 29, 2026, the award advances the Navy’s Next Generation Air Dominance (NGAD) initiative and calls for Boeing to design, build, and deliver a sixth-generation carrier-based fighter intended to replace the F/A-18E/F Super Hornet beginning in the 2030s.

The F/A-XX program will incorporate advanced mission systems, open systems architecture, increased operational range, and capabilities designed to support operations in contested environments.

The development contract includes multiple test aircraft for ground evaluations, airworthiness assessments, systems testing, and weapons integration.

The selection follows Boeing’s 2025 award for the U.S. Air Force’s F-47 sixth-generation fighter program.
