The U.S. Army reported its prototype Stryker-based short-range air defense laser system prototype successfully downed multiple targets during a recent live-fire test.
The Army said the Directed Energy Maneuver-Short Range Air Defense system prototype (DE-M-SHORAD) demonstrated proficiency in shooting down groups of drone targets at the Yuma Proving Ground in Arizona.
Developmental testing of the system is expected to continue throughout the next quarter.
The DE-M-SHORAD features a 50-kilowatt laser weapon developed by Raytheon mounted on a Stryker armored vehicle. Raytheon received a $123 million Army contract in 2021 to develop the laser weapon.
