Israel Signs $540 Million Deal to Fast-Track Iron Beam Laser Defense System
Oct. 28, 2024
Israel has finalized a $540 million contract with Rafael Advanced Defense Systems and Elbit Systems to accelerate the deployment of the Iron Beam laser air defense system.
With this investment, the Iron Beam is slated to come online sometime in 2025. The Iron Beam is a directed energy weapon (DEW) that’s intended to complement the Iron Dome and Israel’s other existing missile defense infrastructure.
The Iron Beam system, developed by Rafael, is designed to intercept short-range aerial threats such as rockets, drones, and mortars. The Iron Beam provides a cost-effective solution with virtually unlimited firing capacity, relying on directed energy rather than traditional missiles at an expected cost of no more than a few dollars per shot.
